California Unemployment?

Can someone please explain what it means when you recieve a "determination of invalid claims based on earnings"? Someone else asked this question and I was unclear as to why the answer provided said that the claimant needed to get an attorney and appeal. Can someone please give me a more clear response based on experience? I've been getting checks for nearly a year.
