Can you suggest any really good soft synths, vst effects, plugins, patches, etc?

I've been using Alchemy for producing ambient and abstract electronica and it's superb. Do you know of anything similar? I don't mind paying for it as long as it's good and suitable for the above genres. Thanks, in advance.
